Congestion in a Local Government Area

Using Connected Vehicle data to understand congestion and travel patterns.

This case study uses Compass custom services. Reach out to our team for more information.

A suburban Local Government wanted to understand how vehicles were moving through their Local Government Area (LGA). Specifically, the council wanted insight into where congestion was occurring, when it was occurring, as well as travelling patterns around irregular events such as long weekends, or special events.

Connected Vehicle data showed congestion was occurring at different sites and at different times, visualised in a custom dashboard as:

  • Speed difference by road
  • Average G-force by vehicle point
  • Average G-force by OSM ID
  • Low-speed hot spots
  • Near-miss hot spots
  • Speed difference by time
  • Overall aggregates by road name (key routes)

This ‘birds eye view’ of the entire road system enabled a broader understanding of what types of congestion were occurring and where.

The data was customised to allow for different day and time selections to be made on demand, enabling the LGA to see speeds, congestion and potential near misses on any roads, in any selected date range.
