Near-Miss - How to use the near-miss tool

The Near-Miss tool allows users to select a polygon over an area and export near-miss data for that selection.

You might notice there is a Near Miss Tool and a Near Miss Visual layer. The difference between the two is as follows:

  • Near Miss Visual Layer — Allows users to view near-misses for the date periods selected without exporting the data and click individual near-miss points. This updates dynamically based on the time periods you select in the Date & Time panel. Read more about the Visual layer below, under Visuals.
  • Near Miss Tool — Allows users to export all near-misses in a selected geographical area, selected via the Zones panel. </aside>

Selecting a Zone to export

Selecting a zone works similarly to selecting a road. To add a zone, click the [Zone Selection] button in the Zone Panel. Clicking once will generate one polygon point. Continue adding points to your shape and double-click on the final point to form your polygon.

Once a zone or zones are selected, data for any near-misses in the polygon area will download in a .csv file automatically. You can also use the boundary tool to select pre-set boundaries, such as LGAs, postcodes, suburbs, or Statistical Area.

Step-by-Step guide:

1. Select the Near-miss tool at the top left-hand corner of the map, under Tool Selection

2. Select a zone in the Zone panel. You can either create a polygon or select pre-defined boundaries (SA4, SA3, Postcodes etc)

3. Press ' Download Results'. This should download a .csv file with data about the near-misses within your area selection that can be opened in Excel or Numbers. You may have to update your browser to allow downloads
