Using near-miss data to understand safety risk across NSW level crossings.
This case study uses Compass Road Intelligence
There are over 1000 near hits at train level crossings (LXings) in NSW each year and many of these happen at passive crossings. Unfortunately, the solution to fix all the crossings at once is impossible. There needs to be an understanding of where LXings pose the most risk to drivers for prioritisation.
By using Compass, UTS analysed driver behaviour entering or near the crossings by looking at g-forces, braking, accelerating, and swerving behaviour in Compass road Intelligence. Identifying near-misses would also help identify risky behaviour.
In the example below is the crossing on Castlereagh Highway, which was identified as high risk in NSW. Data showed:
- Speeding (curve advisory speed is 35/km and general speed limit is 100 km/h)
- Harsh braking and steering when approaching the curve (even when following the curve advisory speed)
Data suggested that the crossing at Castlereagh Hwy, along with many others, are a risk to drivers. It was recommended that the LXings be updated and revised to improve safety.
