Responding to community traffic concerns

Connected vehicle data helps the City of Onkaparinga address community concerns about speeding

The City of Onkaparinga spent significant time answering residents' concerns about speeds and driver behaviour on local streets. Traditionally, the council conducted expensive and time-consuming tube counts to investigate concerns, provide results to residents, and implement infrastructure improvements if required. Using Compass, the council dramatically reduced the time it took to respond to concerns, investigating speeds and traffic behaviour.

For example, the council received a speed complaint about vehicles on Rockbourne Grove and Sunderland Crescent in Seaford. Compass data revealed that, throughout May 2023 to April 2024 (when the complaint was made):

  • Rockbourne Grove had an average speed of 30km/h, with an 85th percentile speed of 44km/h.
  • Sunderland Crescent had an average speed of 25km/h, with an 85th percentile speed of 38km/h.

Since the 85th percentile speeds were below the 50km/h speed limit on both streets, traffic management interventions were not immediately required. The council responded to the resident, sharing the findings and assuring they would continue to monitor speeds.

For councils, this data-driven approach allows for quicker responses to community concerns and more effective engagement with residents. It also helps prioritise interventions without installing tube counts, saving time and resources.
