There are multiple ways to select an area in the Road Intelligence platform. Depending on the tool you use, the Area Selection panel will have a different name. For example, in Path Analysis, it is called ‘Paths’ because you can only select paths.

WKT files are also an option when Advanced View is turned on.

As we move through future chapters, we’ll show you what tools you can select a path, zone, or boundary with. In the meantime, here’s an overview.

How to Select a Path

Path selection is available in Path Analysis, Origin-Destination, and Real Time. Once you’ve clicked the Path icon:

  1. Click on the map where you want to start your path.
  2. Double-click on the end point to end your selection.
  3. To create a more complex path, make a series of single clicks to create as many points along a route as you like. Double-click on the end point to end the selection.

How to Select a Zone

Zone selection is avaliable in Origin-Destination and Near-Miss tools. Once you’ve clicked the Zone icon:

  1. Click on the map to create a corner for your zone.
  2. Click again for each corner you wish to add, placing the dots to create your zone.
  3. Double-click on the last dot to end your selection.

How to Select a Boundary

Boundary selection allows you to select from a variety of pre-defined zones in Origin-Destination and Near-miss tools. Boundaries are based on regional areas and are currently supported for Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the USA.

Once you’ve clicked on the Boundary icon:

  1. Select your region and desired boundary size.
  2. Hover and click the map to choose a pre-defined boundary.

How to Select a WKT

WKT Files are for Advanced users. They allow you to select a LINESTRING or POLYGON. You can read more about them here. In Advanced View, once you’ve made your selection you can also export it as a WKT, copying it to your clipboard.

This type of selection can be made in all Road Intelligence tools. It is only visible when Advanced View is on (found under the Profile icon).

Personalising Area Selections

You can personalise your selections by changing the colour of your selection or renaming it. Hovering over your selections in the Area Selection panel will show more detailed information, such as the length of the selection and how many road-matched map points are included.
